Faust: Mephisto 1

Done for my Costume Design class, Spring 2007-2008

_{For our final, we were able to pick a script to analyze and design for - I choose to do Goethe's Faust, because I'm crazy like that. And, I originally choose to do it in a steampunk style, but I didn't want to do crazy robotic arms and whatnot, so it wound up being stylized Victorian/fantasy moreso than anything.}

This is Mephistopheles, or Mephisto (or, the Devil, if you so prefer). This is the first outfit that he appears in - this is after he follows Faust home as a black poodle, then transforms into this crazy demon, and then walks out, dressed like this.

He is in a charcoal gray suit, with black velvet trims. On the capelet, there is a bit of furry fabric, as he was just a poodle a few moments prior. The cape is lined in red as well, which is kind of his thing.

The cane features a red ball with a snake wrapped around it, as there are a couple of references in the play to his cousin, the snake, who tempted Eve to eat the apple in the Garden. So it needed to be there.

He is also described as having rooster feathers in his cap, which are the red one's sticking out. Finally, there is a line in the play that says (basically) that it is not fashionable to have the horns and tail any more, but he cannot do anything about the cloven hooves, so he has to have them as part of his costume. I'm thinking high-polish, like nice shoes.

And I was told now by 3 random people at school that he is what Alucard should have looked like in Castlevania

_{Oddly enough, it was the best play I have read or seen in my 3+ years in a Theatre program, probably because it's so wholly unpractical to put on - it was written to be read, not performed, I'm certain.}
