Warrior of Night - Orion

Description

This was taken in Spring Green, WI over the Hallowe'en weekend in 2010, when we were at the "American Gods" event with the author Neil Gaiman at the House on the Rock.

I had a nigh-religious experience with the sheer amount of stars you could see out there - I guess I really am from the city, and used to only being able to see the brightest few in the sky. This was overwhelming, to put it mildly, so, of course, I rushed back into the hotel room, grabbed the camera, and played around with how to set it to the longest shutter speed possible to try to capture the stars. When I just looked at the pictures, they looked empty, however, after pulling them up in Lightroom, I saw all of the little specks.

And, when I zoomed in and adjusted a bit, I realized that they all weren't noise like I thought they were, but they were stars. It was surreal to me.

This shot is facing south, I believe. In the lower center, you can see the focus I was trying to get a shot of - Orion, in all of his warrior glory. I couldn't believe how bright he was in the sky!

Also, random tangent, this picture especially showed me how friggin' fast the Earth spins... the reason they've streaked is because I left the shutter open for 30 seconds! Not even a minute, and you can see definite streaking!

That blew my mind, at least...

edit: changed the picture to one where you can see Orion a bit clearer, I didn't realize how it got lost before...

Pardon my random tangent:
OMG NEIL GAIMAN!!!!!!!!!

Now that I have that out of the way this is a nice long exposure shot.
