SOLDIER 1st Class cuff by taeliac SOLDIER 1st Class cuff by taeliac
Well, I made this a few weeks ago (has it really been that long?! Where is time going without me??) on a weekend whim.

The design is traced off of the character art of Sephiroth from the original FFVII, because the Advent Children belt thinger is kinda dumb looking to me. I like the original better.

I know it's different than Cloud's, but that's because Cloud's looked too weird and curvy, I liked the simplicity of Sephiroth's better.

(you can see Sephiroth's here and Cloud's here for comparison's sake)

Traced the design in Illustrator, tweaked with it to make it more size-friendly, printed it out and transferred it to the leather, and pounded away!

The staining isn't the best on this piece, I think I did something weird with it, but I still love the effect of worn leather coloring. The silver bits are liquid acrylics in many, many coats, and everything was sealed off, holes punched in it, and lacing added.

I wear this more than I should. I feel like a nerd every time I do, but I really love it!

I may take commissions on these, or try to have a few done for conventions I'm vending at - we'll see! Assuming that anyone would be interested in buying them, that is...

I was thinking of it - I'll be bringing some of my random Steampunk bits to my next convention or two, so I'm thinking of making a few of them and just seeing if people would like them!

Any other suggestions for designs to put on them, though? This was kind of an inspiration, but I can't think of much else ^^;

Add designs such as Naruto's headband symbols or write down anime titles logos? Character faces etc? Hope it helps. Thank you! ~MJ

this is really cool. you make me want to do stuff with leather.
I made this bag pattern last night and I really want to make it with a thin leather.... Or a leather like material.
So this is really cool and unique!

It's really not that bad to work with - the down side to sewing leather is that any holes you make in it are permanent, so no going back and fixing it later :O I messed up in one spot on the corset I made, and you can see it if you look... otherwise, it's not too bad!

Which reminds me, I need to get pictures of the bugger up here...

Practice with thinner vinyl/faux leather, and it's definitely easier - and softer!!

Otherwise, tooling leather is obscenely easy to learn how to do... way easier than some people on dA lead you to believe (not anyone who watches me, thankfully, otherwise they'd probably see the comment, but I messaged someone over a year ago about some beginners tips or what tools I'd need and they basically told me it was too complicated and expensive, and just leave it to people like him who know how to do it all... I was so miffed I went out and bought the basic tools and taught myself ;P So easy!)

OH WIN. <33 Ah luv Sephy. He looks like Satan, haha.

That's really weird because I just got back into FF after ignoring it for 4 years. :XD:

I'm planning on cosplaying Zack Fair, and I'm having trouble with the armor on his shoulders. Have you got any suggestions for what I can use to make it? D8

:giggle: I love Sephy, too... just too pretty! And angsty, but pretty ;P

This shoulder thing? [link]

I was thinking of blocking it out of leather, but I haven't done that much shaping - basically, you use a lighter weight leather, dye it black, block it over something (I was thinking a piece of tupperwear or other plastic dish stuff) and then seal it, wax it, and attach all the good stuffs... although I don't know if you block it and then dye it, or vice versa ^^; I haven't done much like that, but that was what I was thinking!

If you don't wanna mess with leather, though, you can always find some WonderFlex and shape it with hot water over something, paint it with a few layers of gesso to get rid of some of the weave you can see, and then paint it black :D

Or, there's always the fall-back of making it out of paper clay or paper-mache!

@___@ arghgh, thank you soo much. You and the other person that responded to me are like, lifesavers. C: I was thinking about the paper mache thing, but I'm horrible with paper mache like you wouldn't believe, so thank you veeerrry much! : D

:giggle: Nope! I definitely believe it! I suck so badly with paper mache, it isn't even funny ;P I love using wonderflex for things like that - if you need a hunk of it, I can get it locally and cut it up (I need another small hunk) and ship a smaller piece to you ~ everywhere I found online charges a small fortune for shipping on it, it's ridiculous!

And, seriously! Online places do charge loads for shipping for WonderFlex!

That depends on what sort of materials you're familiar with. You could do it out of plastic, craft foam, cardboard, plexiglass, leather...it just depends on what you can work with, what your skill level is, and how much you want to spend.

Thank you

It's a little blotchy... it's an antique thing, and I think I should have stained it a different base color first, but I got lazy :faint: Plus, one side must have absorbed it better than the other, because one is a bit darker and less blotchy...
