Rinoa - Final Fantasy VIII by taeliac Rinoa - Final Fantasy VIII by taeliac
Well, now. 2 years later, and finally!! I have the fabric, and a pattern drafted! Holy wow.

You have no ideas how much trouble this costume has given me! So I won't even rant about it here, but suffice to say, if you find a supplier for wide ribbed, sky blue fabric for less than $9/yard, please email me with their informaiton!! Geezum, it was such a pain to find.

Well, other than the hassle with the fabric, this wasn't too bad, although it does have the same amount of "pain in the butt" that all knits seem to have for me. But, double needles save the day once again - oh yeah, and newer sewing machines seem to not eat knit like my old one.

Uber wide ribbed sky blue knit fabric, and the wings were stenciled on the back using the same method as this tutorial, except they were done in extremely thin coats (2 for this one), so that the fabric could still stretch underneath, and it doesn't look like a big pile of paint goo on top of the fabric.

The last image is to give a good sense of scale for the ribbing.

I'm not a big fan of the Final Fantasy games but I do love the outfits. By far this is the best I've seen! It's SO COOL! I wish I could buy this one! Can you make another one?

would you happen to have a tutorial or..even a note of how you made your rinoa?

I have a light blue fabric i bought for this cosplay, and sadly its not a ribbed knit (they didnt have any :( ) but any tip you might have would be most appreciated.

Beautiful work by the way

I love the awesome job you did! I'm trying to find the material for that jacket myself. ^^;; You don't have any tips on where to find it do you?

Oh noes! I'm sorry for the uber late reply!!

I actually found this as a complete accident on clearance at a fabric store down in Chicago ... gah, years ago! I think, though, if you take a look at JoAnn's now, they have a huge selection of ribbed knit fabrics, and they may have the right color for you! (or, you could try white and dye it, because it's at least a bit cotton, so it'll take dyes!)

The thing that gave me trouble on my Rinoa cosplay was the skirt. Because, being the genius that I am, I used crushed velvet...*twitch* There was also my little adventure in using fabric paint for the wings (I was definitely smelling the colors by the time I was done). Anyway, this looks very nice! Good job. :D *goes back to angsting over her Fai cosplay*

This looks really cool. I want to one day be able to make my own costumes. Do you mind if I ask how you managed to put the wings on the fabric?

Very cool - I know it's a lot of fun to make costumes, especially compared to clothing or whatnot ~ you get to have fun with them :D

The wings were screen printed (well, more like stenciled) on the back, using very thin coats of screen printing ink. Here is a tutorial that I made for something rather similar: [link]

Just do that, but plan on having to do two or three coats very thinly, so you can still see the fabric texture through it :D

Thank you! I've been wondering on how people are able to do that for a long time.

Very pretty! n.n
I've been searching for the fabric everywhere. It is a very rare fabric to find. I actually have a sweater made from the perfect fabric, but it's a horribly ugly sweater. If it were longer I'd chop it up and make Rinoa's costume. >_>; Anyway, I'm rambling....Awesome job!

Thank you!

Yeah, it is a hard fabric to find - I know your pain! You could always paint wings in the back of it, or reconstruct it - might be cute on it's own! :D
