So this is what ate up a good chunk of my Spring Break - getting this mask done for my Casting and Molding class. This is one of our "big" assignments (think of it as a mid-term) and boy, I put a huge amount of time (and money -___-; ) into making this the very best I could, simply because I was inspired!
Literally, right before designs were due for this (I'll try to keep looking for the original sketch, too, and post it if I find it), I saw 's latest contest posted - one on mythology and mythological creatures, and figured, why the heck not!
So, this is now my entry for the contest. Read more about it here -> [link]
For information on how the mask was made, including materials and whatnot, please check out the WIP guide thingie.
The mask is meant to be worn as a mask, even though it sits more on the top of your head than on your face. There are no straps to hold it in place, but I do need to add a comb to make it stick on better, especially if wearing it with a wig.
All in all, it's really light - I have to say around 2-3 lbs or so, so not that much, considering how many layers there are on it. I was quite amazed, to be honest - I was expecting it to need a chin strap to hold it on and everything. The feathers (real one's) do add a huge amount of drag to it, though. And doorways become a bit of a hassle, because you're paranoid of bonking the beak on something
It is roughly 2 feet long, and a little over a foot wide at the widest. The beak sticks out almost a full foot from your face, which is what makes it disconcerting to walk around in, but otherwise, it is comfortable and easy to wear.
... and before anyone asks, I am planning on making a full costume to go with it, but I haven't decided on style or anything like that - I'm waiting for another bit of inspiration.
Just like I thought from the WIP--this turned out amazing. :3 The one-foot beak thing, as you said, is disconcerting to walk around in... What if you wanted to take a drink of water from a fountain? D:
An image of one of those drinking birds come to mind. XD You know, the fake ones that you put next to a glass of water and if you bob the head down, it'll look like it's getting a drink of water.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
