The Caucasian Chalk Circle by Bertolt Brecht Natella (Act II) Costume design by Louella Powell Garment by Samantha Lemieux with stitching by Jason Orlenko UW-Milwaukee, Spring 2007-2008
This is Natella's outfit from the beginning of the show, where she is coming home from Easter Services before the revolution. I love this top pattern, it's my fav thing I've done this year.
I definitely would love to make a tutorial for drafting this type of top, what do you think? It's rather complicated, but still really pretty, I think. Despite the fabric.
Our most recent show, with which I had many, many beefs (mostly, because the theme was "Oriental" *shivers*)
This is the outfit of the woman who leaves her child behind in her flight from a revolution. She is a horrible woman, who is only worred about herself and her wardrobe.
This show really stuck it home that cheap (JoAnn's) satin brocade should not exist! It looks tacky on stage, and it's so ugly to work with. I still have glitteries all over my stuff from this show.
Anyways, onto more about the outfit. Self drafted pattern, I think I was the only person in the whole damn build not to use a commercial bath robe for their outfit (seriously - since when did any designer ever say "I want Chinese-ish! Lets buy some bathrobe patterns!"... oh wait, that's exactly what my designer said -__-; ) Not only is it shiny, but it is caked in trim. I never, ever want to have to put that much trim on a costume ever again, especially of these types. We basically upended the trim drawers that had been accumulating for decades, and used it all on the show. It was sickening.
Naw, I didn't get to pick any of it out, gawd, I wish I could have... I know about a dozen cottons off the top of my head that would have looked better on stage (not glared horribly!) and would have been cheaper, but nope... the designer is the one who buys the fabric -_-;
I love the blue and gold together, but the colors of the green attract me for some odd reason... maybe it's the bit of black. Indeed, the "oriental/Chinese" thing worked out okay on stage, I guess. I'm still miffed about that wording, but... *sigh*
And, I swear, there are about half a dozen or more different types of trim on this beast, especially the skirt... and all of the applique work *shudders*

*nodnod* I see. Cotton probably would've been better ( more breathable too considering hot stage lights, 2+ hours on said stage, etc. )
I find that without the garish ribbon trim the fabric would be beautiful on it's own, but I suppose since the character was supposed to care more about her appearance than the life of her own child it fits... ( also that the ginko print on the green facric would have probably worked better on a lighter colour like... pink or peach... )
I'm wondering what the correct term would be for "oriental/chinese" type clothing though?... the wording bugs me a bit too...

Yeah, I love the top pattern too. Hell, I love the entire thing. xD It's so PRETTY. Love the colors and, just randomly, I love the sleeves. xD There's something about the sleeves.
Maybe the wording should've been... "East Asia Inspired"? I dunno. I do know that the designs fit the "Chinese/orient" stereotype... Regardless, the workmanship is amazing. I've tried working with that type of fabric before and it shed ALL OVER... there's still residue on fabric I pull out of my bins. >< I would've died having to use that much of it.

Did you pick out the fabric or did someone else pick it out? ( sorry if this sounds like a backhanded compliment or something X< )
All that trim is making me shudder X<
but it will certainly pull off the desired "chinese-ish" effect they wanted... :\
